Drawing from my experience as an artist, I use the iterative process of inspiration, experimentation, feedback, and revision to guide students and teachers in expressing their vision with skill and clarity. As an DEI coach, I collaborate with teachers to engage in meaningful work that requires sensitivity, commitment, and continuous growth. Using an action research model, we analyze student data to identify DEI gaps and translate those insights into research-driven experimentation with instructional practices that honor our students' diverse identities. While I hold an DEI leadership role, I approach this work foremost as a learner—particularly as a white, gay person—committed to deepening my understanding and practice. My teachers and I draw inspiration from Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s Hill Framework, developed from her research into Black literary societies. This framework emphasizes Identity, Skills, Intellect, Criticality, and Joy. I encourage teachers to experiment with this protocol to help foster a sense of belonging among all students in our schools. As a teacher, I bring these principles into my classroom, where students explore the everyday magic within themselves and the natural world. My lessons blend foundational skills like portraiture and perspective with expressive projects rooted in magical realism. I model compassionate critique to guide students in meaningful discussions and help them articulate the beauty they see in themselves and their world. In both roles, I am committed to fostering creativity, inclusion, and growth. observation is one of the most advanced skills an artist can learn. My 7th and 8th grade students completed charcoal drawings and life-sized ink paintings of a live model. They learned a traditional method of figure drawing which includes capturing the model’s gesture first, and then adding details. They began by drawing lines for the spine, shoulders, hips and joints before adding volumetric lines to illustrate the body and clothing. Special attention was paid to drawing wrinkles, which emphasized the movement of a model. The students looked at Edgar Degas’s gestural drawings of dancers, and figure drawings made by contemporary artists Jennifer Packer, Raymond Pettibon, and Jordan Casteel. After drawing several charcoal drawings, the students concluded the unit by drawing a life-sized ink painting. To create this work, they learned how to move their entire bodies to draw a large artwork. What Lurks in the Hallway? - What Lurks in the Hallway? For this assignment students sat in the school hallway and completed a one-point perspective drawing from observation. They learned to illustrate the three-dimensional space by creating horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines organized around a vanishing point. They looked at the work of JJ Manford, and used warm and cool colors to illustrate distance. They also learned how to layer colored marks to create surface texture and optical color mixing. While students were completing this work, they used content-specific language such as one point perspective as well as general academic language such as, analyze, to interpret the processes used by established artists. Learning the process of established artists aided them in developing their own. To address students' social and emotional needs we discussed the challenges that arise when experimenting with different drawing methods. Some artists have a high comfort level drawing geometric shapes with a ruler while others are naturally more comfortable making organic lines. We started class with a short journal writing exercise about emotions experienced while drawing with a ruler. They asked themselves: “How does overcoming obstacles while creating art impact the making and refinement of my work?” After assessing the comfort level of class, students were paired based on one's ability to assist others in drawing with a ruler. They looked at the work of contemporary artist, Chuck Close, to create a gridded scale drawing. Then the students analyzed the use of color in Fauvist paintings and Arcmanoro Niles’s portraits to create complex color mixtures that express emotions. Throughout this lesson they the technical skill of color mixing and its role as an emotional signifier. The students utilized language objectives to analyze the meaning of color in masterworks and in each other’s work. They analyzed the way various hues work together to convey a breadth of emotion. By the end of the project, students developed a broad range of vocabulary to describe the technical and emotional dimensions of color. They observed the work of others and noticed the way artwork can elicit emotions from a viewer. This process helped them distinguish their personal interpretation of an artwork from the artist's intent. Mythological Self-Portraits - Mythological Self Portraits This project is inspired by the transformative power of fashion design. The students looked at artist Wangechi Mutu’s collages and Alexander McQueen’s 2010 spring collection to create unique costume designs inspired by mythology. I prompted the students to take a picture in an action pose and using magazine paper, transform themselves into mythological characters. The art criteria for this assignment includes converting magazine images into clothing, cutting detailed outlines and layering paper to depict a surreal illusion. The language objective for this project was to write an artist statement describing the mythological character’s power and origin story. The SEL prompt encouraged students to become more cognizant of the emotion they wanted to express in the work by embodying it in their pose and facial expression. They were encouraged to create a costume that emphasized this expression. Classroom Gardens - Classroom Gardens For this project 7th grade students created an observational ink drawing of classroom plants. They looked at the work of contemporary ink artists Liu Dan, and Wu Guanzhong, and used bamboo pens and watercolor to compose their drawings. The arts-making criteria for this assignment was to illustrate organic lines with a variety of textures. They also learned how to make a monochromatic artwork by mixing multiple shades of green and looked at Henri Rousseau, Jordan Casteel and David Thorpe’s colorful paintings for guidance. To create emphasis in their drawings they independently choose among the following color combinations: warm and cool, chromatic and neutral, or tints and tones. While completing this project students also met language objectives and developed social emotional learning skills. Students used words and phrases specific to the discipline of art and were essential to how students completed formative assessments of their drawing. They learned to differentiate content-specific words such as value, neutral, and tone from the meanings these words have in other subjects. The students also deepened their social and emotional learning by journal-writing about how emotions impact their creative process. Biomorphic Car Design - Biomorphic Car Design At the beginning of the school year, students complete two car drawings. The first is an observational toy car drawing, and the second is a biomorphic car design. While completing this lesson, students learn how to draw and shade volumetric shapes, and create a design that is functional and aerodynamic. For inspiration in drawing a biomorphic car, students look at museum exhibitions such as MoMA’s Design of the Elastic Mind and the work of Gaspar de Jesus for inspiration. While completing this assignment, students fulfilled language objectives related to observing and critiquing each other’s work. They focus on speaking and writing like established artists through the process of sharing constructive feedback. While looking at each other’s work, they learned to use content-specific language when making observations, giving compliments, or offering suggestions. This process fostered social and emotional development because they learn that art-making is an iterative process that takes time, discipline, and self- confidence to complete. They also developed endurance while completing and editing a long- term project. They looked at the Surrealist drawing game, The Exquisite Corpse, and the animal paintings of Thomas Broadbent for inspiration. The criteria they met included drawing proportionate shapes, illustrating texture, and layering colored pencil to create emphasis. The 6-8th grade students began by brainstorming in small groups about the way in which they “rise” as individuals and as a school community. To generate imagery for the murals, students took photographs and drew symbols related to their theme. To make content-specific photos they completed theater activities where they directed and enacted scenes for the murals. The “director” of the group positioned the “actors” in a pose and then the “photographer” took pictures of the scene. Afterwards the students collaged their photographs and drawings into one cohesive image. We looked at the mural work of Jazmine Hayes and Groundswell NYC as inspiration for how to integrate several images into a unified composition. Finally, the students traced their collage onto a large sheet of paper before each person painted a part of the mural. For this assignment the language target we focused on the most was evaluating the extent to which elements work together to make an impact or convey an intended message. As a group, they discussed and refined their collage to clearly convey a theme. These discussions were also helpful in improving their social and emotional learning. They learned how to generate ideas with others and explain their creative choices in a constructive manner. This required them to work through conflicts to convey an artistic vision representative of every group member. They looked at trump-leole artists such as, Jean-François de le Motte, and Talia Levitt to inspire the content of their drawing. A primary objective for this assignment was to create a balanced composition using the rule of thirds. The students pinned string over their cabinet dividing it into thirds which helped them arrange the objects in a balanced manner. This also assisted them in arranging proportionate objects in their drawings. After completing a pencil drawing, they layered colored pencil over cool-toned paper to create volumetric forms that are naturalistic in color. They were instructed to use the tone of the paper as a means to create cool shadows behind their colored objects. The project concluded with a drawing that piqued the curiosity of the students and viewers alike. They looked at the work of Vasily Kandinsky, Matthew Wong and Shara Hughs for inspiration on how to transform a realistic landscape into an environment charged with emotion. They made color swatches with mixtures of tertiary colors, complementary colors, tints, and neutrals. They combined all of these colors to illustrate value, depth and express a particular mood. To create a landscape painting requires mastery in several elements of art, such as shape, color, line and composition. The students assessed their work throughout the project to ensure these elements coalesced into a unified composition. Using various language objectives, students analyzed their work to determine if these elements worked together to convey a mood. Visual rubrics, peer discussions and journal reflections were used to help them unify these elements into a harmonious composition. During the evaluation process students also enhanced their social emotional learning. They identified how their artistic strengths and challenges affected the message of their work. Botanicals and Biomes - Botanicals and Biomes This was a remote learning activity completed during the first COVID 19 quarantine. During the pandemic, students examined Rachelle Dang’s Socrates Sculpture Park Installation, Seed Box: Trees of New York, and learned about botany’s relationship to colonialism. Dang’s sculpture includes live trees and large sculpted seeds placed inside an 18th century seed case. These seed boxes propagated North American vegetation in Europe and visa-versa, transforming their respective ecologies and food production. To start the unit, students researched the processing and geographic origin of a spice in their pantry. They were encouraged to select their favorite spice or one that had cultural significance. Afterwards, they used it as a mark-making material. Students viewed Carrie Moyer’s multilayered paintings to exemplify composing an image with different marks. The final project was completed with organic and traditional art materials. For the second project, they drew a tree in their neighborhood or from a place that is important to them. Looking at archigram and other architectural designs, they created a dream treehouse to live in during quarantine. Community Quilts - Identity Quilts Students created a community painting-quilt, containing individual identity paintings bordering a collective mural about the joys and struggles of being a middle school student. Students began the unit answering questions about their identity inspired by Jordan Casteel’s In Bloom series, Frida Kahlo’s, Roots, and Njideka Akunyili- Crosby‘s, “Identity” Tate Modern interview. After reflecting on their identities, students drew composite symbols about the intersectionality of their identity. They looking at David Hammons Higher Goals, as inspiration to create interconnecting symbolism about nature and culture. Students painted their symbols using a broad range of tertiary, tint, chromatic and neutral colors. After completing the individual paintings, students worked in small groups to compose a group image about an identity they share; the joys and struggles of being a middle school student. The final composition of the project is inspired by Faith Ringgold’s quilts, which includes students’ individual paintings framing a group image with a written narrative along the border. Identity Vessels and Healing Rituals - Identity Vessels, School Monuments & Healing Rituals This sculpture unit was designed around Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s Hill Pedagogy framework, encouraging students to explore their identities, critique inequities around them, and find joy within their school community. The unit is divided into three parts. First, students designed a vessel inspired by a personal object that represents an aspect of their identity, displayed on abstract or symbolic plinths they created. Second, students developed design proposals for static or interactive monuments to be displayed in the schoolyard, drawing inspiration from how the Black Lives Matter movement transformed the Robert E. Lee memorial and contemporary artists who create socially impactful monuments. Finally, students created a sculpture and an accompanying action to address and heal a school-related issue. They studied artists such as Guadalupe Maravilla and Paul Ramirez Jonas, learning how sculptures can serve as props in communal performances. For example, some students crafted music-making objects paired with poetry to address the mispronunciation of immigrant names, while others created plates of food to foster cultural competency and ease student isolation. This unit empowered students to see themselves as active creators of change, using art to address challenges and build connections within their community.
